Description:
Abstract:
This plot of seismic anisotropy shows two aspects of shear wave splitting. The size of the point shows the difference in time (in seconds) between the arrivals of the two incoming shear waves. A value of ?null? indicates either no data was taken for that location, or the difference in arrival times was small enough (less than 0.05 seconds) that the instrument could not detect a variation. The fast direction shows the approximate direction of flow in the mantle and/or the direction of maximum extension in the region.
Purpose:
Part of the Geophysics aspect of the Geoinformatics Network project.
Supplemental_Information:
The original data file was imported from a raw text file into Microsoft Excel. Column headers were added based on information listed at the top of the file. The file was then exported as a database IV (.dbf) file for easy import into the ArcGIS suite. ArcCatalog was used to convert the data into a shapefile and add projection information. The seismic anisotropy data was imported into ArcMap twice (as two separate shapefiles): Once for splitting time information (dt), the second for fast direction (phi).

Most hypocenters are taken from the Preliminary Determination of Epicenters (PDE) catalog, but locations for events 930217, 941128, and 950706 are taken from unpublished data from R. van der Hilst [pers. comm., 1997].
