This file was then imported into ArcCatalog and then ArcMap, part of the ESRI ArcGIS software package. Each series was then plotted using the Inverse Distance Weighted raster extension, using 1/4 standard deviation and 18 classifications. All projections are North American Datum 1927 (NAD27). THE LAST PUBLISHED COMPILATION OF A GLOBAL DATA SET WAS BY A. M. JESSOP, M. HOBART AND J. SCLATER (GEOTHERMAL SERVICE OF CANADA, GEOTHERMAL SERIES NUMBER 5, OTTAWA, 1976). FOLLOWING THE JESSOP ET AL. COMPILATION, PARTIAL UPDATES OF THE DATA SET WERE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED AT CONFERENCES BY VARIOUS INVESTIGATORS AS THE DATA SET GREW IN SIZE AND COVERAGE. THE ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESENT GLOBAL DATA SET WAS AIDED BY THE EFFORTS OF OTHER WORKERS WHO COMPILED INITIAL SUBSETS. THESE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING: K. LOUDEN (OCEANIC MEASUREMENTS), V. FOR EXAMPLE, HEAT FLOW VALUES FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA WERE FOUND IN BOTH THE OCEANIC AND EUROPEAN SUBSETS; COMPREHENSIVE EDITING RESULTED IN MEDITERRANEAN SEA VALUES BEING PLACED WITHIN THE EUROPEAN SUBSET. THE PRESENT DATA SET INCLUDES 24,420 LINES OF DATA. HOWEVER, IT IS COMMON FOR CLOSELY SPACED BOREHOLES TO BE AVERAGED INTO ONE SITE. THE AVERAGED VALUE FOR THAT SITE IS REPORTED FIRST IN THE DATA SET, FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY DATA FROM THE INDIVIDUAL LOCATIONS (IF AVAILABLE) MAKING UP THE AVERAGE. THE DATA SET COMPRISES 22,182 SITES THUS DEFINED. SOME LOCATIONS ARE INCLUDED WHICH PROVIDE ONLY THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES WITHOUT A HEAT FLOW VALUE.
