SWGEONET Modules Overview |
| Four course modules are offered here with the intention of introducing the
applications and usefulness of the data compiled through the SWGEONET
(Southwest Geoinformatics Network)program. These lessons are intended for the introductory
level college student, or for the upper division high school student. Modules introduce the user to GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and include lessons on geology and topography; hazards; remote sensing; and geophysics. It is recommended that the modules are completed in numerical order, as each module builds on lessons learned in previous modules. National Content Standards for Earth and Space Science, as well as National Geography Standards, are listed with each module. Understanding geologic time and terms will enhance the user's learning experience-- the Tools section of the site contains a geologic time scale as well as a glossary (words in bold print are listed here). Teaching aids and worksheets in PDF format are also available in the Tools section. SWGEONET is a product of GEON (Geoinformatics Network) and is funded by NSF (National Science Foundation) and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). SWGEONET Course Modules were created by Mimi Diaz, with technical assistance from Lela Prashad (Arc/IMS), and under the direction of Ramon Arrowsmith, all at Arizona State University. How to Use Arc/IMSWhat you should see on this page is a vertical toolbar on the left, a map in the center, and a list of layers on the right. Move the cursor over each icon in the toolbar on the left, and a popup window with the function of the icon appears. Many of the icons should be familiar-- the magnifying glass with the + or - for zooming in and out; the hand for panning, and the arrows for pan directions; the black circle with the white "i" for indentify; the binoculars for find; the ruler measures distance; and the printer for print. Some of the other tools may need more explanation. The top left icon toggles between the layers list and the legend on the right side of the window. The top right icon determines whether the overview map (which is on the top left corner of the big map in the center of your screen) is present. You can use this overview map to keep your perspective while zoomed in to selected features; alternatively, if you find it obstructing your view, you can shut it off. The icons below the zoom in and out allow you to view the full extent of all layers, both active and inactive, or to zoom to the active layer. The black arrow next to the hand zooms you to the previous extent (view). The icon with the question mark next to the "i"dentify icon is used for querying the database. Take a few minutes to play with the command icons and familiarize yourself with them. |
